Our work in action

Rebuilding Confidence and Routine After Domestic Abuse

We received a referral from a concerned parent, worried about her daughter who is a young mum of twins. She had recently left a relationship marked by domestic violence and emotional abuse, an experience that left her isolated, emotionally depleted, and physically unwell. Living alone, she was also managing the effects of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), which made daily tasks, including caring for her twins and attending essential appointments, often feel overwhelming.

The challenge:

Between the trauma of leaving an abusive relationship, the physical toll of ME, and caring for twins largely on her own, she was isolated, exhausted, and too low in confidence to face a group on her own.

Support provided:

  • Weekly 1:1 befriending support for 12 months — emotional support, companionship and encouragement

  • Accompanied introduction to group sessions — Stay and Play, Yoga, and Wish for Wellness (where she picked up journaling, which she still uses today) — building the confidence to attend on her own

  • Practical, in-home support to build routines and structure

  • Budgeting advice and support with healthy eating and meal planning

  • Guidance on managing children's behaviour and positive parenting strategies

Outcomes:

  • Increased self-esteem and confidence

  • New friendships and a stronger connection to her community

  • Her children now benefit from regular group activities and socialisation

  • A structured, purposeful weekly routine for the whole family

  • Confidence managing money and preparing healthy meals

  • Now accesses local groups and facilities independently, and still journals to stay grounded

A year of consistent, compassionate support gave this family back their routine, their confidence, and their connection to the people around them.
